Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness recently visited the Kingston Freeport Terminal to inspect two post-Panamax quay cranes delivered by Chinese global port equipment manufacturer Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (ZPMC). He later took to social media to praise the delivery as a “proud moment for Jamaica.”

Prime Minister Andrew Holness wrote on social media: “Today, as two new Ship-to-Shore Cranes take theirplace over Kingston Harbour, l see Jamaicaadvancing withpurpose.These cranes represent confidence in our economy,trust in our people, and belief in Jamaica's role as acentral hub for logistics in the Caribbean.”He emphasized that the new equipment will create additional jobs, broaden opportunities for investment, and supportthe country’s economic growth.

The two quay cranes from ZPMC feature a 60-meter outreach that enables them to handle ultra-large container vessels of up to 15,000 TEU. Equipped with laser anti-collision and positioning systems, the cranes deliver efficient and reliable handling operations. They also integrate personnel-safety detection technology, ensuring a combination of high-efficiency operations and enhanced safety performance. Notably, the cranes arrived in October 2025 and despite the extreme conditionsbrought byCategory 5 Hurricane Melissa, ZPMC completed delivery to full specification.

The new quay cranes are expected to help Kingston Freeport lift its annual throughput toward 2.5 million TEU, significantly reducinghandling times for ultra-large vessels and reinforcing Jamaica’s position as a key transshipment hub in transatlantic trade.
